The urgent need for a program like Serenity Paws and Project Recovery in Colorado Springs is undeniable, given that 10% of homeless individuals have pets, and 80% of those struggle with substance use disorders, making traditional recovery pathways inaccessible for them. ( That is over 400 individuals in Colorado Springs!) These individuals often refuse to abandon their dogs, which serve as vital emotional support and motivation for sobriety, yet most SUD services and living facilities refuse to accommodate them, leaving a significant, overlooked population without support. Serenity Paws and Project Recovery uniquely fills this gap by providing employment opportunities, rides, and housing options for those with pets, (amongst other critical services and resources) directly addressing a critical barrier to recovery that no other organization in Colorado Springs currently offers.  Recently, in front of city council members for funding, a majority took a dismissive stance—claiming “ I don’t see a need for this program”  and ‘they don’t fit in the bucket’ to help with the opioid crisis (SUDs). This was a disheartening yet honest realization that this is a group we are blind to.   We have ignored the tangible, compelling evidence of these individuals' reliance on their pets for recovery, their high rates of substance use, and the potential for transformative change if given the proper support.

By denying access to pet-friendly  SUD services and sober living, we inadvertently perpetuate the cycle of homelessness and substance abuse amongst this group, ignoring the fact that these animals are integral to their owners’ recovery motivation and emotional well-being. Serenity Paws and Project Recovery prove that tailored solutions can save lives, foster healing, and promote community inclusion—an urgent, unmet need that, if addressed, can transform countless lives and demonstrate the city’s commitment to truly inclusive support.
